How To Start Journaling ~ Motivation Monday

Have you heard the buzz about journaling being excellent for your mental health and wanted to give it a try? Have you tried journaling only to feel discouraged when you can’t keep up with it? Don’t be disheartened, there are lots of easy ways to start the journaling process. It does NOT need to be intimidating, difficult, or look a certain way. The beauty of keeping a personal dialog through writing is that there is no right or wrong way to do it. It is a form of self expression therefore there are so many ways to go about it!

The 5 Love Languages

Did you know that people give and receive love in specific ways? I had never thought too much about how I was showing or receiving love until I read the book The 5 Love Languages by Garry Chapman. It uncovered not only my love language but also the love languages of my family.

Through this book I discovered that my Love Language is Words of Affirmation. This means that I feel the most loved when I am verbally acknowledged and that I thrive on encouraging words.

I thought it was an excellent tool for self discovery and also an awesome way to learn more about my loved ones!

Journaling Prompt

As long as I can remember I have been avidly journaling. I have filled notebooks and diaries to the brim with my thoughts and feelings. This has been a very positive form of self care for me through varies life events. I encourage you to start journaling too! It doesn’t take a skilled writer to begin. I thought I would offer you a little prompt today, because sometimes that is all we need to get the ball rolling.

So grab a pen, notebook, and snack (because lets face it, everything is better with a snack) and lets get your journal started!

Write about how you are currently feeling and how you want to feel today.

I will share what I wrote to break the ice…

I am currently feeling a bit of sadness in my heart for the state of our world. I also think that the dark skies and chance of more snow have given me a bit of a gloomy spirit. But I’d like to feel hopeful today despite all of that. I am thankful for my boys, for my home, and for this delicious Love Crunch granola I am enjoying. So hopeful is the word I will focus on today. Not every day is perfectly happy…but every day can be filled with hope. 

Learning To Love My Self(ie)

It’s been a journey for me, but I have gradually learned to love myself. Even so, there are still days that I struggle; days that I find myself in less than a positive mood. Those are the times I know that I need to be extra kind and extend myself grace.

So what did I do today when I woke up in a funk? I strapped on my favorite floral crown, went outside where the lighting is perfection, and had a little selfie photo session. And you know what? This simple act actually helped! It put me in a creative mood and took me out of my pessimistic funk. What was there to be down about when the sun was shining, I was wearing flowers, and I had a bunch of great selfies?

Sometimes it is honestly the little things that add up to create self love. Of course, big action is required as well, but never over look the small things that can be done! For me, this was a great start to flipping my attitude around.

 

 

The “You Can’t Love Others Before You Love Yourself” myth.

I’m going to call BS on the popular concept of needing to love yourself before you love others. I find that to be a wildly untrue and problematic statement.

A person is simply not unworthy or incapable of loving based on their own struggle. If that were true hardly anyone could love because self love is an ever changing concept for each individual and we have all been through troubling times.

Chances are we each have had difficulties loving ourselves on some level…yet that didn’t make our feelings for a loved one diminish. I’ve had my personal issues with self love but through this journey I can say with out a shadow of a doubt I have deeply loved my husband and my two boys. Yes, self love has been an area I am flawed. But I haven’t let that prevent me from falling in complete, head over heels love three times.

I guess what I am trying to say is don’t let your struggles stop you

from living.

from feeling.

from loving. 

You deserve to show love and to receive love even if self love is hard for you.

Did I say the word love enough in this paragraph? 😉
